Subconscious
Communications
Subconscious is the record label/ studio of former Skinny Puppy member
cEvin Key. I cannot say enough in the space alloted about how amazing
this band's body of work is. Despite the death of keyboardist Dwayne
Goettel, the subcon team's new projects have continued to inspire and
amaze me with every release. Everybody should own a copy of Skinny Puppy's
"Mind:TPI", "VIVIsect VI", and "Last Rights", and Download's "The Eyes
of Stanley Pain".
ohGr
This is the new project of former Skinny Puppy front man Nivek Ogre.
Fun and bouncy electronic music that is a nice change of pace from the
normal "gloom and doom" of most bands working in the genre.
A new album is expected sometime in 2003.
Atom
Heart If everybody making electronic music would take a moment to
listen to the GENIUS behind "Pop Artificielle" the world would
be a happier place right now. Atom Heart is the man behind Senior Coconut,
Lassigue Bendthaus, and countless other electronic projects that never
cease to amaze me. He comes VERY highly reccomended.
Radiohead
You might have heard of these guys. I've been listening to "OK
Computer", and "Kid A" several times a week since I moved
to NYC. They are the only mainstream band that really pushes musical
envelopes. If you haven't really given them a chance i suggest you do
so... now.
haujobb
One of the most amazing electronic acts in the "industrial"
genre. I can't say that I haev ever been disappointed by anything they
have released. The sideprojects (NEWT, Architect, Cleaned Visions) are
also well worth checking out.
Collide
This is another of my personal favorites. Their first release "beneath
the skin" has been played by me at least once a month since I first
bought it in 1996. This is another band that comes HIGHLY recomendedto
anybody with an interst in electronic music. A wonderful mesh of well
structured electronics, augmented with angelic vocals.
Xingu
Hill, Ammo etc I first bought Xingu Hills "Alterity" last year and
my jaw hit the ground. This is one of the most well crafted cd of audio
sculpture that I have heard since Skinny Puppy's "Last Rights" Again
it comes highly recomended.
Imminent
Starvation Have you ever wondered what the sound of the Terminator's
brain rhythm was? If set to a mechanized dance beat it would HAVE to
be Imminent Starvation. This is as raw as electronic music gets. Their
last album "nord" is a good introduction to the world of power electronics.
Ant
Zen One of few labels that I WILL buy blindly from. I have yet to
be disapointed by anything that I have purchased from them or their
sister label hymen
Ant Zen started as an arts collective but slowly mutated into the
premiere over seas label for "industrial music, chilling ambient, technoid
rythms, and power electronics"
Flatline Flatline is
the OTHER label that I buy blindly from. They have a roster of artists
that spans everything from the power electronics of Noisex to the noisy
ambient techno of NEWT.
Strange
Fortune Wondering where you can purchase the majority of this over
seas music? Give strange fortune a try. If they don't have it they can
probably order it. Not to mention the prices are INCREDIBLE. Don't expect
to find the back street boys here. Strange Fortune is owned by my friend
Mike Salo, who I used to dj with in Pittsburgh years ago.
C2,
Control.org etc Control.org is one of the many musical personalities
of my friend Jason Taylor. I swear there is nothing that this man cannot
do. His projects range from well the well thought out ebm of mindstalker
to the crunchy dance beats, and audio terror of djco2, and C2. Ant-Zen
fans should take note. Very well worth the listen.
Nyarlathotep
Wecome to the scary atsmospheric landscapes of my friend (and the
co-conspiritor in"Morpheus
Laughing" ) Derek Pegritz. Gotta love music that is inspired by
equal parts H.P Lovecraft, John Carpenter's "The Thing", Gary Numan
and of course Skinny Puppy. Derek has an unexplainable love for New
Wave, but I don't hold it against him. If you dig on the darker side
of electronic music, then his last cd "the Crawling Chaos" may just
be up your alley.
